Glossary

client
Each computer your department staff use to access CLERK is called a `client'. A department will have one or more client computers.

hardware
Computer hardware are those parts of the computer you can touch - the monitor, speakers, floppy drive, etc.

Linux
Linux is the name of a computer operating system, and is a competitor to Microsoft Windows.

network
A computer `network' connects your departmental computers together. The network will generally consist of a box, plus wires connecting the box to each computer.

NIBRS
National Incident Based Reporting System. NIBRS is a new method of reporting crime statistics which will eventually replace summary reports such as UCR. More details.

operating system
An `operating system' acts as a bridge between computer hardware and software. All computers must have one active operating system. For PC's, the two most common operating systems are Microsoft Windows and Linux.

server
All your CLERK data is physically stored on the `server'. Each department will have one server.

SQL
Structured Query Language. SQL is an internationally recognized database standard. CLERK's database server is based on an implementation of SQL.
